What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, as it is commonly referred to, is a grappling and ground fighting-based art, with a Gi or without. The point of BJJ is to control and submit your opponent using technique, not strength. In layman’s terms, it’s wrestling with the ability to apply submissions!
What can I expect in a BJJ class?
All classes will begin with lining up by rank, highest to lowest, and bowing in. By which, shows a sign of respect for the art of jiu-jitsu, instructors, training partners, and self and promotes focus and discipline while taking your class. We always start with warm-ups to get the body moving. Warm-ups consist of various exercises that include basic calisthenics, strengthening movements, drills, etc. After this, it is time for technique work which is the majority of the class. Lastly, the class will end with jiu-jitsu sparring, positional work, games, etc., before lining up again and bowing out.
Do I need experience to start?
Not at all! Anyone can start jiu-jitsu and be successful. What is important is that you go at your own pace if you’ve never done jiu-jitsu before. It can be an intense yet extremely-rewarding workout. At NWMA, we believe it is paramount for all students to do THEIR best. Don’t let the previous inactivity hold you back; you can do it!
One question that we get a lot is from folks with previous wrestling or martial arts experience is where should they start? We always tell people to come into fundamentals classes first and get acclimated, and then we’ll assess to see when we need to move you up into regular classes. So if you’re wondering about your experience and where that places you, you should consider if you haven’t taken any grappling classes, then fundamentals are for you.
